
Dr. Benjamin Marxhausen

Dr. Benjamin Marxhausen is Professor Emeritus of Concordia University in Irvine, California with over 40 years of experience in teaching art at all grade levels — kindergarten through university — including work among the mentally challenged. He is a nationally known speaker, and his works of art can be found in private collections, churches, and schools throughout the United States and beyond. Born in Waltham, Minnesota, in 1933, Marxhausen earned a degree in education at Concordia College, Seward, Nebraska, in 1958. He holds a master’s degree in art education and studio art from the University of Minnesota, and he completed postgraduate work in painting and sculpture at Eastern Michigan University. Chicago Art Institute, and the University of California. Irvine. In 1996 Marxhausen was conferred with the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. Beyond classroom teaching, Marxhausen has conducted numerous art workshops throughout the United States for adults and youth and served as art consultant for architects, publishers, schools, and churches. Working in the studio arts throughout his career as an art educator, Marxhausen observed the intuitive process involved in expressing one’s self creatively and learned to trust that intuition. Noting the transforming quality that occurs through creativity, Marxhausen focused on freeing that spirit in each of his students as well as himself His style of painting, which he calls intuitive Abstract, invites and entices the viewer to free his/her own spirit. Alter retirement from his career in art education, Marxhausen continues to be very active in art through studio work in painting and sculpture and offering consultations, lectures, and workshops to various groups. Marxhausen has had numerous articles and other works published including illustrations for children’s books written by his wife, Joanne. Benjamin and Joanne reside in Lincoln, Nebraska. They have three children and four grandchildren.
