C. Daniel Newberry

Dan Is a sculpture and assemblage artist, working mainly with metals, wood and found objects. His works are asthetlcally pleasing abstract sculptures, many suited or indoor, or out.

History
Dan was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1950. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska
in 1968. After serving in the Marine Corps and a tour of duty in Viet Nam, he returned, keeping Omaha as his place of residence ever since.

Dan’s work reflects his interest in ethnic and folk art. Decorated utilitarian objects
and spiritual paraphernalia of the indigenous people of the Americas and African
antiquities are constant motivators for his art.

Although inspired by these art forms, he strives to keep the interpretations loose
and the imagery highly stylized.

Working with metal is also a passion. His welded steel pieces include indoor and
outdoor fountains, free standing and pedestal pieces, and wall hangings of assembled salvaged steel.

Whiie studying in Belgium, Dan was affected by a totally different lifestyle. This in
turn affected his art and he began to move in a different direction. Through necessity, a new appreciation of the ‘found object’ began to develop.

Working with these objects was not a total surprise, considering Raushenberg and
Kurt Schwitters have always been two of his most admired artists. A series of small sculptures were made duringthls period with the discarded odds and ends of peopies lives.

More recently he is in valved with the experimentation of bending wood. Through
steaming, lamination, and kerfing, he is attempting to press wood Into different
and unusual forms.

Although lacking in spontaneity, this is still an exciting and challenging new
direction.
