"The Grand River's Journey" is one of a series of drawings created this summer and reflects my interest in the bodies of water that surrounded me
while I was growing up in Michigan. Inspired by the childhood memory of
cutting a design into paper to create a lantern and "Origami Architecture", a
2001 show at the American Craft Museum, I used an exacto knife to make marks
on 140 lb. paper. The marks are based on the geography of the water, water
patterns, as well as geographic and community landmarks. I combined these
marks with Native American creation myths, fables and my personal stories to
suggest a threshold from simple documentation to a place full of metaphor and
fantasy.
