WOMEN & ART

By Emily Kampschneider

Attractions and events continue at the Louisville Art Gallery this year. Visitors can view the latest exhibit of the third annual Women Artists Invitational and can sign up for classes set to begin next week.

Gallery owner Steve Sherman said the classes were something he wanted to pursue since the gallery first opened, even though they are being offered sooner than expected.

“It’s a program I thought I would start in a few years, but I had an artist who needed a residence,” he said.

The classes include basic drawing, basic oil painting and figure drawing beginning Aug. 3, Aug. 4 and Aug. 5, with sessions once per week for six weeks. The classes will be taught by Melissa Husby of Lincoln.

Originally from San Francisco and artist for 33 years, Husby has studied figure drawing and portrait painting. She graduated with a degree in fine arts from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, Calif., and also attended the graduate school of figurative art at the New York Academy of Art.

Husby’s teaching credentials include University of California-Berkeley, John F. Kennedy University, a studio in Sante Fe, University Place Art Center and a studio in Lincoln.

Her relationship with Sherman began when the gallery opened. A number of her works have been displayed in the past, as well as in the current exhibit. Hubsy brings her classes to Louisville because it was the most available option at this time.

Those interested should email Husby at Melissa@louisvilleartgallery.com or call 234-2867. The number of students accepted is limited to 10 with preregistration suggested before the first scheduled class.

Another current feature at the gallery is the Women Artists Invitational scheduled through Sept. 11. The opening was July 17 with Contemporary Dance Omaha and live music from jazz musician Luigi Waites.

Sherman said it was a positive reception and the displayed art pieces carry a dance theme.

Artists and their respective mediums are Hubsy, oil, pastel and drawings; Rita Murphy, oil; Madalyn Bruning, acrylic and watercolor; Inna Novilcova, acrylic; Peggy A. Martin, watercolor; C. Kelly Lohr, oil; Brenda Everson-Wiesman, oil; Rachel Mindrup, oil; Dorothy Haws, acrylic; Mary Kolar, metal and acrylic; Jean Mason, oil and acrylic; Shelly Bartek, acrylic; Amy Smith, pottery; Deb Groesser, oil; Carolyn Hadsell, pottery; Judy Greff, acrylic; and Karen Stiehl-Osborn, textile and acrylic.

The gallery 230 Main St., is open from 10:30 a.m. — 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
